What is VUCA?

Someone recently asked me if I knew what VUCA was.  I had no idea.  A quick google informed me that VUCA is an acronym that stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity.  A combination of qualities that, taken together, characterize the nature of some difficult conditions and situations…Pretty relevant for what we’re all going through right now as entrepreneurs and business leaders.
 
The interesting thing about volatility is that even though it might represent danger, it can also represent opportunity. The point is that volatility can be good if you are seeking opportunities, and bad if you like predictability. 
 
How does this relate to hiring you might ask?  Right now exists an opportunity to add key employees you were unable to attract in February because you were too busy, or the market was so tight.  Here’s 2 advantages to hiring now: 

• Intentional Hiring
  I’ve heard from several executives that after hiring under duress the past few years they can slow down and not feel rushed.  Now is the time to conduct an intentional, thorough and professional search process which will result in a much better outcome. 

• Talent Loosening Up
  We are witnessing business sectors that just 3-4 months ago were at 2-4% unemployment dramatically loosen up.  Here’s an incredible opportunity to attract key talent that wasn’t available at the start of the year.
